Description

Process industries represent a significant share of European industry in terms of employment and turnover, but also in terms of energy, resources consumption and environmental impact. Thus, it is imperative for such industries to have a dependable, replicable and cost-effective methodology that helps them achieving significant improvements in the efficient use (and re-use) of raw resources and energy, easing effective use of cross-sectorial competences.

MONSOON project aims to establish data-driven methodology and tools to support identification and exploitation of optimization potentials. This is achieved by applying model based predictive controls to perform plant and site wide optimization of production processes, by working in multi-scale fashion at different layers of the SCADA pyramid. The MONSOON project concepts build upon the idea of the cross-sectorial data lab, namely a collaborative environment where high amounts of production data from multiple sites are collected and processed in a scalable way. The data lab enables multidisciplinary collaboration of experts, including operators and managers from different plants, technology and process experts, data scientists, automation engineers, practitioners in processing, machine learning and analytics, etc. The data lab allows cross-sectorial teams to jointly model, develop, simulate, verify, deploy and evaluate multi-scale distributed controls. This will help plants in meeting their optimization goals in rapid and cost-effective way, thanks to hybrid simulation and seamless integration techniques which ease rapid prototyping and deployment in real production conditions. In order to foster cross-sectorial transfer of knowledge, the MONSOON methodology employs harmonized site-wide dynamic industry models, which can be seamlessly referenced within the data lab and with an overarching real-time plant operations platform, thus improving easier integration and maintenance of deployed control.
